305- The ad that inspired me to live life as I wanted to | INSPIRATION

Today I want to share something very special. This ad from 1992 certainly changed my life.

I immediately pulled it out from the magazine and placed it next to my most precious belongings. Chances are that these words are partly to blame for my nomadic life. I reread it every so often, so as not to forget the message: We should not be afraid.

Some weeks ago I shared the video of a conference we gave to 500 media and advertising creatives in Pamplona, during the annual meeting of the Creative’s Club of Spain. That day I showed for the first time this ad with a photo of a runner named Barry Sanders. At the time, I was not interested in his name, or cared too much that the text was really about trying to sell me running shoes. I was left with just the words of this advertisement that changed my life.

Nike wanted to sell me shoes. I bought ideology. You can read the full text further down.

Thanks for flying with us. Welcome to year 16.

Too often we are scared.

Scared of what we might not be able to do.

Scared of what people might think if we tried.

We let our fears stand in the way of our hopes.

We say no when we want to say yes.

We sit quietly when we want to scream.

And we shout with the others,

when we should keep our mouths shut.

After all,

we do only go around once.

There’s really no time to be afraid.

So stop.

Try something you’ve never tried.

Risk it.

Enter a triathlon.

Write a letter to the editor.

Demand a raise.

Call winners at the toughest court.

Throw away your television.

Bicycle across the United States.

Try bobsledding.

Try anything.

Speak out against the designated hitter.

Travel to a country where you don’t speak the language.

Patent something.

Call her.

You have nothing to lose

And everything

everything to gain.

Around the World in 10 Years | OUTDOORX4 MAGAZINE

For those of you who sit behind a desk every day, you can probably relate to the guy who has been working a corporate job and repeating the same routine, day in and day out. For Pablo Rey, the monotony of a successful career in advertising finally caught up with him and in a nearly impromptu decision, he left the comfort of his job and coerced his wife, Anna, to leave the material world, pack up their van, and travel the world.

Around the World in 10 Years is the story of liberation, survival, humility, and passion for the human experience. Pablo Rey expressess himself wonderfully in sharing his and Anna’s travels through areas most people would dare to go, meeting people along the way who, despite limited means, share what they have with two foreigners who often times stuck out like a sore thumb. Pablo’s sense of humor keeps the story lively and the experiences he and Anna shared while overland the world are the stuff that makes adventure travel such a worthwhile venture.

“Life is everything that happens while you’re making other plans.” John Lennon.

If you have an adventurous spirit or merely need inspiration from the daily grind, Around the World in 10 Years is definitely for you.
