Today I want to share something very special. This ad from 1992 certainly changed my life.

I immediately pulled it out from the magazine and placed it next to my most precious belongings. Chances are that these words are partly to blame for my nomadic life. I reread it every so often, so as not to forget the message: We should not be afraid.

Some weeks ago I shared the video of a conference we gave to 500 media and advertising creatives in Pamplona, during the annual meeting of the Creative’s Club of Spain. That day I showed for the first time this ad with a photo of a runner named Barry Sanders. At the time, I was not interested in his name, or cared too much that the text was really about trying to sell me running shoes. I was left with just the words of this advertisement that changed my life.

Nike wanted to sell me shoes. I bought ideology. You can read the full text further down.

Thanks for flying with us. Welcome to year 16.

Too often we are scared.

Scared of what we might not be able to do.

Scared of what people might think if we tried.

We let our fears stand in the way of our hopes.

We say no when we want to say yes.

We sit quietly when we want to scream.

And we shout with the others,

when we should keep our mouths shut.

After all,

we do only go around once.

There’s really no time to be afraid.

So stop.

Try something you’ve never tried.

Risk it.

Enter a triathlon.

Write a letter to the editor.

Demand a raise.

Call winners at the toughest court.

Throw away your television.

Bicycle across the United States.

Try bobsledding.

Try anything.

Speak out against the designated hitter.

Travel to a country where you don’t speak the language.

Patent something.

Call her.

You have nothing to lose

And everything

everything to gain.
